Stephane recording the drums for superman Is Dead
The first spark for Superman Is Dead came 2 years ago during a rehearsal in front of my daughter Minya, when I improvised what was to become the song Another Sky. After several years of doubts, soul searching and real life, Another Sky finally gave me the desire to make another album…
With over thirty new songs since The Mandala Sessions, the task of getting down to selecting, arranging and recording them was terrifying. Lady Luck, however, stumbled my way a couple years later in the form of a pizza at my egyptian friend Reda’s restaurant in my new hometown, Bordeaux. He introduced me to a young drummer called Joachim Bérose who, after having heard some of the demo songs, brought in Stéphane Dériau-Reine and Benoît Michalon, a production team based in Bordeaux. After some very effective advice, Benoît helped me select the tracks (you can thank him for Camille…) then handed me over to his partner. Stéphane is a producer/arranger/ keyboard player… from another planet. He has played with the likes of Simple Minds, Alexander O’Neill, and Light of The World.
In the span of 2 weeks in early June 2007, the creative madness set in and the songs came to life under his magical fingers.
I brought some of my crew down to the studio- miss Constance for a duo on Falling Snow and Mr. Nico Baudino for his magical sax… We completely re-arranged Christmas Song, an old tune I had co-written with Marc Collin (from Nouvelles Vagues fame)… The craziest part was recording my boys Fly and Jon; Fly and I ended up flying out to Shanghai to record Fly’s vocals and Jon’s guitars because Jon couldn’t leave his work (even though he’s the boss… Go figure…) After adding a final recording session in Ramatuelle to get William’s lead vocal on Feel Love, the album was put into the hands of another madman, Albert “Speedy” Gruber, for the mix. Speedy is a 25 year old Austrian engineer who works with Stéphane; his magical ears made sense of an average of 100 tracks per song… Between live gigs, another month of mixing madness, and putting the graphics together with miss Céline (who also does my websites), the summer slipped by until, finally, in sept 2007, Superman Is Dead was born…

La première étincelle qui me donna envie d’enregistrer un nouvel album se manifesta lors d’une répétition devant ma fille, Minya, dans mon ancien studio à Paris, en Mai 2005. Le morceau que j’ai improvisé en la regardant devint Another Sky… Après plusieurs années de doutes, l’heure était venue de me remettre à la musique.
Avec plus de 30 nouvelles chansons depuis the Mandala Sessions, l’aventure était de taille. La chance me sourit 2 ans (et un déménagement) plus tard lorsque mon ami Egyptien, Réda, qui tient un pizzéria au bout de ma rue à Bordeaux, me présenta un jeune batteur nommé Joachim Bérose. Jo écouta quelques maquettes de travail et décida de les montrer à ses amis Benoît Michalon et Stéphane Dériau-Reine. Grâce à des conseils pertinents de la part de Benoît, et après une sélection acharnée des morceaux (je le remercie de m’avoir convaincu de mettre Camille…), les chansons se retrouvèrent entre les mains de Stéphane. Steph, un arrangeur/producteur/clavier qui a travaillé, entre autre, avec Simple Minds et Light of The World, et est définitivement d’une autre planête…. En l’espace de deux semaines en Juin 2007, il arrangea et enregistra les 11 morceaux de l’album - en jouant quasiment tout les instruments lui-même. Hmmm… Je fit descendre de Paris quelques membres de ma tribu- miss Constance pour un duo sur Falling Snow et mr. Nicolas Baudino pour son saxophone magique. Par contre, pour enregistrer les guitares de Jon, Fly est moi sommes partis à Shanghai - l’animal ne pouvait pas se libérer de son travail; on en a profité pour enregistrer les voix et la flûte de Fly ainsi que pour faire deux petits concerts dans un pub Irlandais, le Thirsty Monk…
De retour en France, les dernières touches furent mises sur l’album à Ramatuelle courant Juillet avant que les enregistrements soient remis entre les mains d’ Albert “Speedy” Gruber, un jeune ingénieur du son Autrichien. Ses oreilles magiques ont permis de mixer des morceaux qui, en moyenne, contenaient plus de 100 pistes… Chacun. Après un mois d’aventure de mixage et de mastering, puis de graphisme avec miss Céline (qui fait aussi mes sites internet), Superman Is Dead vit le jour un bel aprés-midi de septembre 2007…
